Botulinum toxin injection for wrinkles

Botulinum toxin (Botox®, Dysport®, Azzalure, Vistabel®, etc.) treats expression wrinkles by reducing the action of the muscles that cause them. It does not fill in wrinkles like fillers but relaxes the skin muscles in the treated areas. In this article, we will provide more information about Botox injections, the principle behind this aesthetic method, its price, contraindications, treatment duration, and more.

Botulinum toxin injection procedures:

In the forehead area, the only solution to release the frontalis muscle was through surgical cutting during a facelift or endoscopy. In aesthetic medicine, botulinum toxin injected directly into these muscles achieves the same result, while preserving enough mobility to maintain facial expressiveness. Even if you feel a tight skin sensation, it is actually the relaxation of the skin muscle that eliminates the wrinkles.

It has been used for a long time (Botox®, Dysport®) to treat spasms of the eyelids, face, or neck. In comparison, the doses of botulinum toxin used in aesthetic medicine for wrinkles and fine lines are very low.

It involves a few tiny injections, just a few millimeters deep, distributed across the forehead muscles or between the eyebrows, as well as on the muscles creating crow’s feet wrinkles. It is also possible to lift the tail of the eyebrow if it is pulled downward. The needles used are very fine, so the botox injection is almost painless.

(Note: Botox® is a brand of botulinum toxin used for neurological purposes that was widely used in the early days. Botox is often mistakenly used as a general term.)

Small bruises may appear but are rare. In the following week, you may experience a pulling sensation on the forehead or a feeling of tightness. Mobility is reduced but not fixed if the doses are light. Some transient reactions such as headaches have been described. If injected improperly by an inexperienced practitioner, botulinum toxin can temporarily paralyze unwanted facial muscles (drooping eyelids, difficulty smiling, overly high or low eyebrows, etc.).

After 4 to 6 days, the effects of the toxin are visible: spontaneous smoothing of the upper half of the face. The forehead becomes smooth, losing its severe and sad appearance. The crow’s feet wrinkles are greatly reduced. Initially, the effect of the injections gradually decreases after 4 months. By renewing the session without too much delay, it is common to achieve results that last 6 to 7 months or more (after 3 sessions). There is no paralysis or muscle destruction, but often, one loses the habit of furrowing the brows in these areas.
